A good solid wood bed lasts decades. Before you choose one, it helps to understand the woods, the sizes and the storage options. Here is the short version we give customers in our Ashiyana showroom.

Teak or sheesham?

  • Teak is dense, naturally oily and very stable, so it resists moisture and keeps its shape through Lucknow’s humid monsoon. It has a warm golden-brown tone and is ideal for carved and heirloom pieces like the Regalia carved teak bed.
  • Sheesham (Indian rosewood) is strong with a beautiful grain and slightly darker tones. It is a great choice for everyday family furniture.

Whichever you choose, ask for seasoned or kiln-dried wood: it has been dried properly so it will not warp or crack later.

King or queen size?

In India a queen bed usually takes a 60 × 78 inch mattress and a king takes 72 × 78 inches. For a master bedroom with room to walk around the bed, king size is popular; for guest rooms and smaller bedrooms, queen size leaves more space. Leave about 60 cm free on each side for side tables and walking.

Storage beds

Storage beds are a big help in Lucknow homes, where bedding, quilts and seasonal clothes need a place to go. A hydraulic lift lets you raise the whole mattress platform easily, like the Milano executive storage bed. Box storage with drawers suits rooms where the bed sits against a wall.

Upholstered or all-wood headboard?

An upholstered headboard is softer to lean on when you read in bed; a solid wood or fluted headboard is easier to keep clean and suits traditional rooms. Many of our beds can be made either way.
